A giant energy manufacturing company known as ShinRa Inc. was harvesting the sheer life energy of the Planet as a simple fossil fuel. Processed and made into products known as Mako and Materia, these materials can work miracles, granting the wisdom of the Ancients to the user. However, this substance, like all other fuels, is finite in supply, and the Planet's lifeforce was being malevolently drained by the constant exploitation of Mako by ShinRa Manufacturing. Though aware of the harmful effects, they functioned without remorse.
However, the real battle did not lie with the corporation, but with a force much more competent from the distant past. A long-thought dead warrior bent on becoming the ruler of Gaia, coupled with the Planet's drained energy, threatened the very existence of all life on the planet.
A small rebel group, Avalanche, emanating from the slums quelled the various dangers toward the innocent, and one mercenary for hire was forced to look within deep-seeded memories, and decipher what was a deception, and what was true.
The group confronted the man known as Sephiroth, who was planning to cause a wound in the planet with a might known as Meteor, and use the planet’s lifeforce to fill his body with god-like powers. The group was able to stop Sephiroth, however they did not catch meteor in time. The planet’s lifestream had to protect the planet from ruin, and however successful, it caused the planet much devastation.
After the fall of the Meteor, ShinRa Corp. was greeted by a devastating turn of events. Rufus was missing in action and Midgar had been destroyed, resulting in the loss of their major Headquarters. Swiftly, they managed to relocate to Junon and uncover all research that was seemingly lost with the ruins. This research, including notes on Jenova and other powerful entities, was put to use immediately to create a more perfect army, by the order of Vice President Manfred von Elbe. In doing so, Remnants were created under their command. After many experimentations with these Remnants, freewill soon developed, and they began to rebel against their creators.
A year has passed since the fall of meteor, and a fateful ceremony occurred in the city of Junon--Manfred von Elbe was promoted to President of Shin-Ra. The man then attempted to murder a certain Turk, though he was saved by no one other than Tseng himself. A small group of chosen people were then taken to none other than Rufus Shinra's mansion. With the existence of the former President established, the group a long with his faithful Turks plan to take back the company that belongs to them. With Hojo revived, and remnants on the loose, a fear of the return of Sephiroth was soon established, and has continued to linger still.
