Nagas History

Nagas History

Present (Eighth) Pass, 35th Turn

Note: This is the Pass that leads up to the Long Interval which sets the opening conflict for F'lar and Lessa, but is two Passes AFTER Moreta's time.

Please consider this history as being independent from the books, beginning several generations after Second Landing. Northern geography and places are the same as canon books: Fort Hold/Weyr, Benden, High Reaches, Tillek, Ruatha, Igen, Telgar, and so forth. Keep in mind that Nagas Hold and Nagas Weyr have only been around for a few months over 2 Turns--the Weyr was "finished" about two weeks before Leilanth's and Hidranth's clutches hatched. All the Northern Weyrs and Holds were abandoned just over 2 Turns ago because of the plague.

Pre-Nagas Weyr History

World History, as put down by Anne McCaffery:

Nagas Weyr History

Almost 1900 Turns after Second Landing on the Northern Continent, the dragon population was growing so large as to begin straining Pern's ecosystem. As is the nature of Nature, Pern developed a disease to weaken the dragons and reduce their population. Because the dragons were all located in the Northern Continent, the disease failed to exist in the Southern Continent.

While scouring the Southern Continent for medicines to combat the disease, riders and Healers discovered that the warmer, drier climate (among other things) reduced the severity of the disease. All the Holds EXCEPT Nagas existed in the south prior to the move. Nagas was something like a mining camp, which sprang up as crafters came to work on the new Weyr and needed places to live. Nagas Hold and Weyr have only been in existence for about 2 Turns.

However, the dragons' and their riders' population had been devastated by the disease. All their hopes rested in the last clutches laid before the queen began displaying symptoms (she already had the disease, but did not show it until after the clutch was laid), and in the clutch of another queen, already sickened by the plague. Carefully and delicately, the clutches were moved to the new Weyr before the eggs hatched in hopes that they would hatch far away from the disease affecting their ancestors. There were desperate concerns about the clutch as one-third of the eggs appeared subtly different from regular eggs; the fear was that these eggs were affected--and possibly killed--by the disease.

In the last 2 Turns, a great number of changes have occurred: Nagas Hold was created at roughly the same time as Nagas Weyr, created as an encampment for the workers who worked feverishly to get the Weyr built before the clutches Hatched, it became a Hold by Weyr decree, and Bukas Hold was only declared a Hold a fortnight before the Hatching, although the Lord Holder had been Lord Holder in all but name for several Turns before that.

Candidates were gathered and deposited and with the few "recovered" dragons in attendance, humming to welcome the new hatchlings into the world, Leilanth's and Hidranth's clutches totaling 34 hatchlings hatched, revealing not only very healthy normal colors, including a queen, but also what appeared to be perfectly healthy mutations, also including what appeared to be a queen.

These first weyrlings, now 21 months old, have graduated into the Wings and are fighting their first Fall. A few of their number have been lost between, but several full riders have been lost during Threadfall; this still leaves the Weyr at just over one Flight (three Wings) of fighting dragons, rather than the four Wings that had been hoped for.

The first Gather was successfully held at Samas Hold, just after Junior Queen gold Teralith's flight, with the promise of yet another new generation. The weyrlings' graduation occurred the day after her clutch was laid. Now, that clutch is beginning to Hatch!

The crafthalls world has been devastated in the last two years. A problem has been brought to the attention of the Mastercrafters: many Holds are losing skilled workers because each Hall is located in only one place, and many Journeymen and Masters prefer to stay with the Hall rather than take a permanent position with the Weyr or the other Holds. There is also the problem that parents are reluctant to send their offspring 3-500 miles away to Apprentice and are inclined to Apprentice their children to a local Hall or allow the youngsters to idle at home.

Some of the Halls are beginning to court the idea of adding minor Halls in some of the other Holds, especially the minor Holds.
