A B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P Q R S T U V W X Y Z Azul - a blue star in the galaxy of Comet's Head with three asteroid belts and eleven planets. Bleater - an animal like Earth's goat with the exception of it having three horns on its forehead and it is as big as Earth's newborn pony. Blue Streak - A comet that passes Kreysthahl every four hundred cycles. This comet gathers space debris along its tail as it passes around its trajectory through the Comet's Head galaxy. The comet will be seen only if and only if it is near enough the planet when it passes otherwise it will not be seen or noticed and a Shower will not commence. Blue Wood - a contemporary of Earth's Giant Red Wood. It grows to two hundred feet and up to four hundred feet tall. The chosen living quarters of "normal" people, a.k.a. Tree folk, of Kreysthahl. Has a magical/chemical property that makes it impervious to Ribbon. Bonnie - like a Blue Wood but not as tall and does not live as long as a Blue Wood. The chosen wood for furniture and what not by the Tree Folk for it hardens to a semblance of Earth's steel once it is carved shaped and dried. Branch - a minor city, is beholden to a Tree and has a number of Stems that are beholden to it. Burrower - a snake-like creature that love to eat dragonling eggs. Candidate - someone found during a Search to be presented at the Hatching Grounds when the hatching begins. chaa - a hot, stimulating drink made from the flowers of the Blue Woods and tasting faintly of chamomile. Chomper - a crocodile-like creature that lives in the swamp lands of Wesan and Sotan. Will eat any living thing that goes into the water where it lives. Comet's Head - the name of the galaxy in unknown space where Kreysthahl is located. Cook - someone versed in cooking or baking food. Ceruline Melon - A type of blue melon grown on Kreysthal. Similar to Earth's watermelon. cycle - a Kreysthahl year, fifteen months long. day - forty hours long. deadglow - a numbskull, stupid. Den folk - people who live in the dens as support staff for the Rider folk. Denling - a child age 12 and below who is born in the Den. Densinger - the harper for the rider folk, usually a rider himself. Dragon - the winged ice- and fire-breathing creature that protects Kreysthahl from Ribbon. Dragon Healer - someone versed in the care of dragons' ills and ailments. Dragonberry - A type of red berry found on Kreysthahl. It is named due to the fact that the berry itself resembles the shape of a dragons egg. Its taste is similar to Earth's strawberry. Dragonling - the miniature versions of Dragons. Fisher - someone versed in the art of catching fish or sailing through the waters of Kreysthahl glowbasket - Kreysthahl's form of light. These baskets are organic and has a chemical element inside its stems and branches that when shaken will make the basket glow. As long as they are watered once a day, they will continue to glow when shaken. grazers - animals that graze and are considered herbivores. Guardian - keepers of the peace. Someone versed in the art of war and self-defense. A guard at entrances to Trees or a guard for the Heir/s of Trees or Branches. Guild folk - people who spend their lives mastering a particular art/career/job. Harper - Harpers are the teachers and entertainers of Kreysthahl. They educate the young in guilds, holds, and dens; they guide the elders in the practice of their traditional duties. The Masterharper of Kreysthahl is responsible for the training of harpers, the appointment of trained harpers to Den, hold and guild, and the discipline of harpers. The Masterharper acts as judge, arbitrator, and mediator in disputes between Lords Holder and between Den and hold or guild, but any harper can be called in to mediate if necessary. hatchling - a newly hatched dragon Hatchling - an inexperienced rider folk under the tutelage of the Hatchling Master. His rank symbol is an inverted "V". Hatchling Master - usually an aging rider with good skills and the ability to discipline and inspire the young. Responsible for the training of young riders and their dragons. Head steward - Selected by the Kingrider to co-run the Lower Caverns with the Headwoman. The Headsteward shares the duties with the Headwoman. Among his duties are, the supervision of tithe collections, den maintenance, keeping a tally of the animals in the Feeding Pens for the dragons, in charge of the stables and the animals that live in them, and care of the Candidates while they have not yet Impressed. Headwoman - Selected by the Queenrider to run the Lower Caverns, the Headwoman supervises the general domestic machinery of the Den and the individual dens of the riders. Among her duties are the care of the young, Denting; the supervision of food collection, storage, and preparation; den maintenance; and nursing, under the aegis of the Den healer(s). Healer - a person knowledgeable in maintaining people's health and well being. Herald - someone who brings messages either on foot, Runner, or on a Runnerbeast, Herald. Herder - someone versed in the care, breeding and/or herding of domesticated animals. Hopper - a rabbit-like animal that can hop up to five feet high with a hopping distance of fifteen to twenty feet from starting point to ending point. Hoppers are generally hard to catch because their hide blends so well with the surrounding area. They have very long ears as long as a man's arm and can grow as big as Earth's goat. Impression - the joining of minds of a dragon and his or her Rider-to-be. After hatching, a hatchling, not the rider, chooses his partner and telepathically communicates this choice to the chosen rider. Interval - the period of time between Showers; generally four hundred cycles. interval – a period of time during which no Ribbon Rains and Rider Folk decrease in number. Long Interval - a period of time, generally twice the length of an Interval, during which no Ribbon falls and Rider folk decrease in number. The current Long Interval is thought to herald the end if Ribbons. looks to - is impressed by, This phrase is commonly to denote a dragonling’s owner. Maize - Maize is a form of corn brought over from Earth. Miner - someone versed in mining metals and precious rocks month - eight weeks Mooh - a cow-like creature with fur instead of hide. It has a neck twice a long as a cow from Earth. Its body structure is like Earth's horses but their head is that of Earth's cows. They grow to thrice the size of Earth's cows. Planter - someone versed in the care, planting, harrowing and harvesting of grains, fruits, vegetable, spices, etc. Port – The act of instantaneously going from one place to another. Prowlers - these are animals that were brought from Earth. They are carnivorous but they are afraid of humans, loud noise, and fire. They were used as pets and watchdogs by some tribe that was killed during the first shower. The animals however escaped and lived to prosper in Sotan because they were left there during the move to Noran. Rain - term used to describe the time that Ribbon is falling to the lush burnable grounds of Kreysthahl. Ribbon – the word Ribbon is a misnomer. Ribbon is actually space debris that falls slowly like snow and leaves a dark after glow in the sky like black ribbons on Kreysthahl. Ribbon burns everything it touches within a hundred feet be it organic or not. Exceptions to this are the Blue Woods and Bonnies. To safely dispose of Ribbon, one must first freeze it then burn it respectively. One must not let Ribbon thaw from its icy prison or it will burn anything it touches once again. In addition, one must not fling water to it for there is a property in some of Kreysthahl’s waters that acts as fuel to the fire instead of drowning it. Rider Folk - a.k.a. Riders. Those who have been Impressed and ride dragons to fight Ribbon. Runnerbeast - also called "runner". An equine-like animal with grey hooves, silver hair, and blue eyes. Quite a few distinct variations where found: heavy duty cart and plow animals; comfortable, placid riding beasts; lean racing types; and agile, long-endurance types. Sage Fruit - It is a type of green tree fruit found growing on Kreysthahl. Its look is similar to that of an orange, yet the taste is similar to a lime. Scalies - these are animals native to Kreysthahl that are reptilian in nature and are considered predators. Scratchie - a chicken-like animal that is as big as Earth's dog the Great Dane. They have hide instead of feathers and have bat-like wings. However, for the most part, they look like Earth's chicken and they scratch the ground a lot looking for food to eat. Scurrie - a squirrel-like animal that is twice as big as Earth's squirrels. They look just like squirrels except for a horn on their forehead, a hairless hide except for its tail, and they come in a variety of colors from a simple brown to something as bizarre as having two to five colors on its hide. Likes to scurry around for fruits and nuts. Shower - a period of time during which Ribbons drop on Kreysthahl. A Shower generally lasts sixty cycles and occurs approximately every four hundred cycles. A shower commences when a comet, Blue Streak, is seen in the horizon and passes near Kreysthahl enough to entice the space debris attached to it's tail to fall to the planet Kreysthahl. Smith - someone versed in Glass Smithing, Metal Smithing, Weapon Smithing, or Jewel Smithing. Spottie - a cheetah or leopard. A term that got used by the people over the cycles to describe the spots of the animals. Sorrel - A type of green vegetable grown on Kreysthahl. It is similar to Earth's Cabbage. Spectralberry - A type of redish/pink berry which only grows near blue woods. It is similar to Earth's grape. When one bites into a spectralberry, it pops like a balloon. Stem - comparable to a cot, is beholden to a branch. Stripie - a tiger. A term that got used by the people over the years to describe the stripes of the tigers. sweetsand - Kreysthahl's form of soap with a sweet scent. Tanner - someone versed in producing leather or leather working Tawnie - a lion. A term that got used by the people over the years to describe the hide of the lions. Trader - someone who goes from Tree to Tree, Branch to Branch, or Stem to Stem, to deliver goods available in one place to another where none is available and vice versa or someone who buys goods from a traveling trader and sell it in their own store. Tree - A Tree is the term used to call the place where the "normal" folk of Kreysthahl live. Trees were initially created inside the mighty Blue Woods where Ribbon will not be able to burn; they began as places of refuge. They grew to become centers of government, and the Tree Lord became the man to whom everyone looked for guidance, both during and after the Rain of Ribbon. A Tree is considered a Major city. It has many Branches that are beholden to it. It is in charge of making sure every Branch or Stem under it does not fall to Ribbon. And is in charge of collecting tithes that will be given to the Den that the Tree is beholden to. Tree Folk - people who live in Trees, Branches or Stems. Considered the normal folk inKreysthahl. Vintner - someone versed in the production of wines. Void – the place between ports. All sensory input is negated. A very cold place. Weaver - someone versed in weaving fabrics or tailoring clothes. Woodworker - someone versed in wood cutting or wood crafting. Zahkey – Kreysthahl’s version of an intoxicating drink. |
