How they work..

You get points for doing basically everything on the site, from posting every day to posting once a week for a month. Each thing is weighed differently and more things you can do will be added every week. How you earn points has endless possibilities, you are encouraged to give us more options. Here are just some examples of how it you can earn points.
.. you earn 1 point for posting IC.
.. you earn 5 points for posting in your familiars perspective.
.. you earn 10 points for being one of the first 10 to join the site.
.. you earn 5 points for offering a site suggestion that is implemented.
.. you earn 15 points for participating or 20 points for hosting a site wide event. .. you earn 25 points for having a unique familiar (gorilla?).
.. many, many more.

What to do with those points..

"Discover it, name it, own it."

Discover it

Lets say you are an herbalist. You've accumulated a good amount of points and want them to be put to some use. Using 50 points, you could "Discover" a new plant. You decide this plant has the ability to temporarily heighten your Talent, making it possible for a third degree to be a second degree for a week. You get to use this new discovery 5 times before it becomes "undiscovered". You aren't limited to just plants either, what you discover can be just about anything.

NEW However, you can not discover new familiars. In order to discover a new familiar you must use the 'Discover New Rare Race' that costs 500 pts. See that option for more details on it.

Want it to be a team event? Rather than pay 50 points, spend only 20 points (each) and discover something together! To encourage this, everyone in the group gets to use it 5 times and gets a discount on naming and owning it.

Name it

For 25 points you can name this plant and it will be added to the encyclopedia, you listed as its finder. You write up your own description, even a small paragraph about how it was found if you want. This lets you use it for 3 more times, and you only have to pay 25 points the next time you want to rediscover your plant.

For team effort it costs only 15 points, which can be divided up. Whoever puts in points towards it will have their name in the Encyclopedia.

Own it

This takes the largest amount of points, 75 to be exact, but it allows you to control the production and distribution of this plant and no one else will be able to rediscover it. So if someone is interested in buying (with their points) your discovery, you set the price, and how many is available. You also get their points for it. Cool, hu? Like a business.. only with merit based points that have no /real/ value. The use limit is altered so you can sell or use it a maximum of 8 times each month (irl time).

Team discount on own is that it only costs 50 points. Each discoverer can set the price of their own share and is allowed to sell the item a maximum of 4 times a month.

These discoveries don't have to be just plants. They can be new silk, maybe a genetic glitch in a horse that gave it a feathered tail, or a new cloth that grants invisibility for a little while. Possibilities are endless. But this isn't the only place you can put your points.

.. purchasing a rank up (ie, from Count to Duke)
.. purchasing more men for an army
.. purchasing favor with the King
.. purchase your own board (a whole board of your own, not just a thread)
.. purchase your own paragraph in Ostensia's history
.. purchase exclusive 'point only' breeds of familiars. Like a white tiger, or a oddly colored/marked wolf...ect.

F.A.Q.

Q: I didn't purchase the "name it" or "own it" with my discovery, what happens after I use it 5 times?
A: When it becomes undiscovered, others can use their points to rediscover the item again (maybe its in a new area?), and they have the opportunity to then name it or own it.

Q: How do I go about using my points?
A: If its part of the "discover it, name it, own it" system then you contact an admin and give them a brief run down of what you want to discover and if anyone will be going with you. After they give the approval, you go to your point log and subtract the used points. You may start a thread and discover it if it is a team event. Or you can just post once in your journal about that day.

If its for another reward, contact an admin still and tell them what you used the points for. They will then give you a run down of what to do, if its like buying a house or a rank up, and then you subtract from your point log like usual.
