Legal Procedures

The Arrival
The Hell legal procedures for dealing with souls on trial are rather different from anything found on earth. When a soul arrives in the waiting room, their assigned lawyer meets them and escorts them to the Deadman's Hotel, where they live in modest comfort until their trial is over. Escape really isn't an issue, since there's nowhere better to run to for a human.

Pre-Trial
Humans meet with their assigned lawyers on a daily basis before their trial, trying to put together a defence. A lawyer will have two or three clients at any given time, so the human will have most of the day alone. Trying to disprove sins is very difficult, so usually a lawyer tries to argue that the human cannot be held responsible for some of them; enough of them to get into purgatory, heaven, or to get a chance at reincarnation. The lawyer needs to prepare his notes and arguments for trial.

The Trial
Everything comes together at the trial, where the defence attorney assigned argues against the prosecution attorney. Evidence is brought in such as character witnesses (dead and damned relatives of the client,) historical clips (demon magics can call forth images of the past,) and biblical quotes. Other religious text can also be used, although they usually hold less weight.

Post-Trial
A jury of twelve Hell residents decide the human's destination; Hell, purgatory, reincarnation or Heaven. Purgatory and reincarnation are both middling options; the first is for sinners who aren't quite bad enough for hell, and the second is for sinners who can be proven to regret their evil ways and wish to change. Within a day of the verdict, the human is sent off to their final destination to serve their sentence.
